What kind of language do you speak?

Since I love to write, and so many of you are still writing me asking to continue, I am going to compromise here and from now on just make the posts shorter since it hurts to stay on the keyboard to long. So here’s my first short thought.

“I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.” (Matt. 13:35)

Why do so many Christians speak in terms and phrases that nobody but a Christian would understand? Jesus is the perfect example of how we should live our lives, and in today’s verse, He made it very clear that He believed in speaking clearly so everyone could understand what it was he was trying to say.

I have an idea for you today, or if you’re in another time zone, tomorrow. Take your favorite Bible verse, make it into a story (parable), and share it with someone and watch their reaction. While in Seminary, we were taught how to cover the basics of the Bible in one short 5 minute period. Of course we didn’t cover it all, but we did it in such a way as to make it understandable an relational. This is the only way that we can reach people for Jesus, to make it relational.

I’m sure there will be people who disagree with me on this, but for those who do I say we are all called to work with different levels of people, so instead of thinking how wrong we are to approach people with the basics, think of it this way. For those of us who are the more relational types, we can reach people initially, you can mentor them afterwards and teach them at a more advanced level. Both are equally important, and neither is wrong. I have the education to grow someone’s knowledge, but I have the heart for the unsaved. Follow your heart.
