Do you love? I mean REALLY love?

Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. (John 13:34 NRSV)

I am amazed how many Christians have been in the church all their lives and still have missed the Gospel. So many folks still live in the Old Testament, bound by legalisms, restricted by the “Thou shalt nots” without being empowered by “Thou shalts.” Some are experts at the Ten Commandments, but absolute failures at the eleventh and most important of all.

Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Let us note that this is what Jesus most desires out of us. He wants us to love one another. We may tithe. We may teach Sunday School. We may sing in the choir, serve on the official body of our church, even make visits on behalf of our church. All of these are wonderful. But if we do not love, we have missed the Gospel.

What can you do to be more loving?

  1. You’re right Mike, Love is the greatest commandment, and what the Lord most wants of His followers.

As I look at myself and see who I was without Christ, and read the Bible and understand the depth of love that the Lord has shown me in dying for me in spite of who I was, I find myself at the beginning of understanding what He means to love one another.

Then, I read Ephesians 5 and the commandment that I am to love my wife as Christ loved the church, who dying, gave Himself for it, I understand a little more what this love means. It is sacrificial, selfless, devoted.

Though the Bible does not state it in so many words, I cannot believe that the love we show one another is any less than the love of Christ for His Church.

And I take it one step further, perhaps, in extending that circle of Christ-like love beyond fellow believers and extend it to my neighbor as well. I truly believe that the Lord wants his disciples to treat others with the same love as He has shown us, unbelievers included.

    BE Love To Your Neighbor.

    God bless!
