Living to worship God

Nebuchadnezzar answered and said, “Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him, and set aside the king’s command, and yielded up their bodies rather than serve and worship any god except their own God. (Daniel 3:28 ESV)

The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego and the fiery furnace has always been a favorite Bible story of mine. In this story we find the contrast between worshiping an idol and worshiping the one true God. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are faced with the idea of having to worship a golden image made by Nebuchadnezzar or face death. In reality there was a third and more powerful choice and that was the worship of the one true living God. They chose to worship God even at the risk of losing their lives. At the end of the story we read how their faith and devotion to God saved their lives.

Like these three men of God, we face the same challenges of either worshiping idols or worshiping God. Our worship of idols today may not look like a ninety foot high and ninety foot wide golden statue. Our worship of idols today may not have the same immediate results of being thrown into a fiery furnace and it does not mean they still do not lead to death. In reality anything that we worship or put before God is an idol and does lead to our eventual destruction.

As Christians must ask ourselves on a daily basis if we going to live this day in total devotion and worship to God? Are we eager to be like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who were willing to die than to worship anyone thing other than the one true living God?

May God teach us to live in total devotion and worship of Him.
