Does your Bible read you, or do you read your Bible?

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Hebrews 4:12-13 ESV)


We may think we read our Bibles, but if we’re honest, our Bibles read us. For starters, God’s Word knows “the thoughts and intentions of the heart”, which is a bit frightening to say the least, for the “heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9) In fact, the Bible is like a sword that pierces and penetrates us.
